Infrared scanning is such an important tool, the US Department of Energy recommends it. Here’s  quote from the DOE web site.

“In addition to using thermography during an energy audit, you should have a scan done before purchasing a house; even new houses can have defects in their thermal envelopes. You may wish to include a clause in the contract requiring a thermographic scan of the house. “

Infrared was discovered in 1800 by astronomer Sir William Herschel, while taking a break from recording the temperatures of all the colors of the rainbow. 

Two Honeywell research scientists adapted thermal imagers for commercial use.

Early thermal imagers were huge, like early computers.
